How Do I Calculate the Value of My Platinum?

Platinum is one of the rarest precious metals — about 30 times rarer than gold. Calculating its value follows the same principle as gold and silver: weight × purity × spot price per gram.

  1. Weigh your item in grams. Platinum is dense (21.45 g/cm³), so even small pieces can be surprisingly heavy. A standard platinum wedding band weighs 6–10 g.
  2. Check the hallmark. UK platinum jewellery is almost always 950 (95% pure). Bullion is 999 (99.9%).
  3. Multiply: For example, an 8 g wedding band at 950 purity: 8 × 0.95 × £47.69 = £362.44 spot value.

What Purity Is My Platinum?

Unlike gold, which comes in many carats, platinum jewellery in the UK is almost exclusively 950 purity (95% platinum, 5% alloy — usually ruthenium or cobalt for hardness).

In the UK, any item described as “platinum” must be at least 850 parts per thousand (85%) and must carry an assay office hallmark if it weighs more than 0.5 grams.

Does Platinum in a Catalytic Converter Have Value?

Yes — automotive catalytic converters contain platinum group metals (PGMs) including platinum, palladium, and rhodium. A typical catalytic converter contains 3–7 grams of PGMs.

Important legal note: Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, it is illegal in England and Wales to buy or sell catalytic converters removed from vehicles unless you hold a scrap metal dealer's licence. Catalytic converter theft carries severe penalties. Only sell through licensed motor salvage operators or vehicle dismantlers.

If you have a legitimately obtained catalytic converter (e.g. from your own end-of-life vehicle), a licensed scrap dealer can test and value the PGM content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is platinum more valuable than gold?

It depends on current prices. Historically, platinum was more expensive than gold, but since 2014 gold has generally traded at a premium. Today, fine platinum is £47.69/g. Check our platinum price per gram page for a live comparison with gold.

Does VAT apply when selling platinum?

No. When you sell platinum to a UK dealer, you receive the agreed price with no VAT deduction. VAT (20%) applies only when purchasing platinum bullion, making the buy/sell spread wider than for gold.

How can I tell if my ring is platinum or white gold?

Check the hallmark. Platinum is stamped with an orb and cross symbol alongside the purity number (e.g. 950). White gold is stamped with a crown (for gold) and a carat number like 750 (18ct). Platinum is also noticeably heavier than white gold of the same size.

Can I sell dental platinum?

Yes. Dental crowns and bridges sometimes contain platinum alloys. A dealer can test the metal content with XRF analysis. Dental platinum is typically 850–900 purity and is valued at the corresponding scrap rate.

Where can I sell platinum in the UK?

Use our dealer directory to find verified precious metal buyers near you. Many gold dealers also buy platinum. Always get at least three quotes and confirm the dealer is registered with the appropriate local authority.
