Quick Answer
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its market value, due once a lunar year has passed with your zakatable wealth at or above the nisab. The nisab is 87.48g of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36g of silver: today £8,832 and £900. Value jewellery by its weight and carat at today's price, not what you paid for it. 22ct gold is £92.48 per gram today, so its zakat is £2.31 per gram, or £26.97 per tola.

Zakat on Gold Per Gram and Per Tola Today
Zakat is 2.5% of the value, so the figure depends on the carat. Hallmarks show the carat as a number: 916 is 22ct, 750 is 18ct, 375 is 9ct (see our hallmark numbers guide).
| Carat | Value per gram | Zakat per gram | Value per tola | Zakat per tola |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24ct (999) | £100.86 | £2.52 | £1,176.40 | £29.41 |
| 22ct (916) | £92.48 | £2.31 | £1,078.66 | £26.97 |
| 21ct (875) | £88.34 | £2.21 | £1,030.38 | £25.76 |
| 18ct (750) | £75.72 | £1.89 | £883.18 | £22.08 |
| 14ct (585) | £59.06 | £1.48 | £688.88 | £17.22 |
| 9ct (375) | £37.86 | £0.95 | £441.59 | £11.04 |
A tola is 11.66g. Fine gold is £100.96 per gram today; each carat is that price × its purity. Live 22ct figures: 22 carat gold rate today.

How to Value Your Gold for Zakat
The National Zakat Foundation gives two acceptable ways: ask a jeweller what they would pay you for the gold today, or weigh it and multiply by today's price per gram for its carat. NZF describes the second as the most accurate, and it is what the calculator above does.
Gold value = weight in grams × today's price per gram for that carat
Zakat = gold value × 2.5%
- Find the carat from the hallmark (916 = 22ct, 750 = 18ct, 585 = 14ct, 375 = 9ct). Asian gold is usually 22ct; UK high-street jewellery is usually 9ct or 18ct.
- Weigh each item on scales that read to 0.1g, or ask a jeweller for the weights. Stones and clasps that aren't gold don't count.
- Multiply by today's per-gram price for that carat (table above), add the items up, and take 2.5%.
What you paid, the shop's current price for a similar piece, and insurance valuations all include making charges and retail margin. Zakat is on the gold content at its market value, which is lower. For the live per-gram rates see 22ct, 18ct and 9ct, or value a single item with the gold calculator.
Gold Nisab or Silver Nisab?
The nisab was set at 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. When gold and silver were money the two were equal; today the silver figure is far lower (£900 against £8,832). NZF and Islamic Relief advise:
- Gold is the only asset you own: measure against the gold nisab.
- You own a mixture (cash, savings, silver, shares as well as gold): measure against the silver nisab. Some scholars hold that gold should be used regardless; NZF calls silver the safer choice and the one that helps more recipients.
The calculator follows that rule automatically and lets you override it.
Is Zakat Due on Jewellery You Wear?
The schools of thought differ, and UK charities explain both positions:
Zakat is due on all gold and silver jewellery, whether it is worn every day or kept in a drawer. This is the view most South Asian families in the UK follow.
Jewellery worn for personal use, in reasonable amounts, is exempt. Gold kept as savings, as a store of value or for trade is zakatable in every school.
The calculator counts everything you enter. If you follow a school that exempts worn jewellery, leave those pieces out. Gold-plated items have no zakat on the base metal; white gold is valued by its carat like any other gold (NZF). For a ruling on your own situation ask a scholar.
When Is Zakat on Gold Due?
Zakat falls due once a full lunar year has passed with your zakatable wealth at or above the nisab, and it is worked out at the prices on that date. Many people fix their zakat date in Ramadan. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to the moon sighting, so the price on your zakat day can differ from today's; this page updates daily, so come back on the day.
Gold prices moved a long way in the past year, which changes the pound figure for the same jewellery. Our gold price history in GBP shows the yearly figures.
Zakat on Gold FAQs
Today the gold nisab (87.48g of gold) is £8,832 and the silver nisab (612.36g of silver) is £900, at the live UK prices this page uses. The weights are fixed; the pound figures move with the metal prices, so check on the day your zakat is due.
Zakat is 2.5% of the gold's value. Value the gold at today's price for its carat (weight in grams × the per-gram price for that carat), then take 2.5%. For 22ct gold that is £2.31 per gram today.
A tola is 11.66g. One tola of 22ct gold is worth about £1,078.66 today, so the zakat on it is about £26.97 (2.5%). For 24ct gold the figure is £29.41 per tola.
The gold nisab of 87.48g is 7.5 tola, worth £8,832 today. The silver nisab of 612.36g is 52.5 tola of silver, worth £900.
No. The nisab is a threshold, not an allowance. If your net zakatable wealth is at or above it, zakat is due on the whole amount (National Zakat Foundation).
It depends on the school of thought you follow. In the Hanafi school zakat is due on all gold and silver jewellery, worn or not. In the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools jewellery worn for personal use, in reasonable amounts, is exempt, while gold kept as savings or for trade is zakatable in every school. If you follow a school that exempts worn jewellery, leave it out of the calculator.
UK zakat charities (NZF, Islamic Relief) advise: if gold is the only asset you own, measure against the gold nisab; if you own a mixture of assets (cash, savings, silver as well as gold), use the silver nisab, which is lower, so more people qualify and more reaches those in need.
Yes. Zakat on gold can be paid from the gold itself: 2.5g for every 100g (NZF). Most people pay the pound value instead, which this calculator gives you.
