How the Price Per Ounce Is Set
The reference price is the LBMA Gold Price, set in London twice each trading day (10:30 and 15:00) in US dollars per troy ounce, with gold also trading around the clock between those fixes. UK dealers convert the dollar price into pounds at the current exchange rate, then quote their own buying and selling prices either side of it.

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. The ounce on kitchen scales (avoirdupois) is 28.3495g, so a troy ounce is about 10% heavier. Gold, silver and platinum are always priced per troy ounce.
One kilogram of fine gold is worth £100,960 today (32.15 troy ounces at £3,140 each). A 1 kg bar sells for a little more than that because dealers add a premium for making and handling.
Nearly. A 1 oz Britannia or Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of fine gold, worth £3,140 today. Dealers sell them for a few per cent above that (the premium) and buy them back a little below it. Sovereigns contain 0.2354 oz (7.32g) of gold.
The troy ounce has been the unit for precious metals since the medieval trading fairs of Troyes in France, and the London bullion market, the world's reference market, still sets its benchmark gold price in US dollars per troy ounce. UK dealers convert that figure into pounds per ounce, per gram and per kilo.
This page quotes pounds. The international benchmark is in US dollars per troy ounce, so the sterling price moves with both the dollar gold price and the pound-dollar exchange rate: a weaker pound raises the UK price even when the dollar price is flat.
