What 24 Carat Gold Is
Carats count the parts of gold in 24. 24ct is all 24, which the UK hallmarks as 999 (at least 99.9% gold). Refiners and mints go further: investment bars and the Royal Mint's gold Britannia are 999.9 fine, “four nines”. Either way the price is the same: the spot price of fine gold.
Pure gold is soft and scratches and bends in daily wear, so British jewellers rarely use it for rings or clasps; 24ct jewellery is mostly East Asian and Middle Eastern chains and ceremonial pieces. Most 24ct gold in the UK is bars and coins, which is why dealers quote it per gram and per ounce.
The £99.16 per gram on this page is the metal value. A dealer sells a bar or coin for the metal value plus a premium (manufacturing, handling and margin), which is a few per cent on a one-ounce Britannia or a 100 g bar and more on 1 g and 5 g bars. When you sell, bullion dealers pay about 95-98% of the metal value for recognised bars and coins.
Common 24ct Bullion
- • Gold Britannia (1 oz, 999.9, since 2013)
- • 1 g to 1 kg bars (999.9: Royal Mint, PAMP, Metalor, Umicore)
- • Canadian Maple Leaf (1 oz, 999.9)
- • Austrian Philharmonic (1 oz, 999.9)
Metal Value Today
- • 5g bar: £495.80
- • 20g bar: £1,983.20
- • 50g bar: £4,958.00
- • 1oz coin: £3,084.22
Tax: investment gold (bars of at least 995 fine and coins of at least 900 fine) is VAT-free in the UK. Britannias are UK legal tender, so gains on them are also free of Capital Gains Tax; bars and foreign coins are not. See Britannia prices and gold bar prices.
21 Carat Gold Price UK — £86.77/g (875)
21 carat gold is 21 parts gold in 24: 875 fine, or 87.5% pure. At today's rate it is worth £86.77 per gram (£1,012.07 per tola), between 22ct (£90.83) and 18ct (£74.37). It is the everyday jewellery standard in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Egypt and much of the Gulf, so most 21ct gold in Britain arrived as gifts or purchases from Dubai and Cairo gold souks.
21ct is not one of the UK's hallmarking standards (375, 585, 750, 916, 990 and 999). A 21ct piece assayed in the UK is marked at the next standard down, 750, even though it holds more gold than an 18ct item. When you sell, a buyer should test it and pay for 87.5% gold content, not the 75% the hallmark suggests: ask for a quote at the 21ct rate.
| Weight | 21ct Gold Value | Same Weight in 22ct |
|---|---|---|
| 5g | £433.85 | £454.15 |
| 10g | £867.70 | £908.30 |
| 20g | £1,735.40 | £1,816.60 |
| 50g | £4,338.50 | £4,541.50 |
24ct vs Other Gold Purities
| Purity | Hallmark | Gold Content | Price/Gram | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24ct | 999 | 99.9%+ | £99.16 | Bars, Britannias, Maple Leafs |
| 22ct | 916 | 91.67% | £90.83 | Sovereigns, Krugerrands, Asian gold |
| 21ct | 875* | 87.5% | £86.77 | Gulf and Egyptian jewellery |
| 18ct | 750 | 75.0% | £74.37 | Fine jewellery, engagement rings |
| 14ct | 585 | 58.5% | £58.01 | US and European jewellery |
| 9ct | 375 | 37.5% | £37.19 | Everyday wear, durability |
*875 is not a UK hallmark; 21ct items are hallmarked 750 in the UK. The 916 hallmark is 22/24 = 91.67%; the table prices 22ct at the 0.916 standard.
24ct Gold Price FAQs
The 24 carat gold price in the UK today is £99.16 per gram, £991.60 per 10 grams and £3,084.22 per troy ounce. 24ct is fine gold, so its price is the spot price itself; every lower carat is worth its purity share of this figure. Updated twice daily from the London spot price.
24k and 24ct are the same thing (k is the American spelling of carat), so the 24k gold price per gram in the UK is £99.16 today. Dealers quote bars and coins at a premium above this, and pay a little below it when you sell.
Yes, as near as makes no difference. 24 carat means 24 parts gold out of 24. In practice it is sold as 999 fine gold (99.9% pure, the UK hallmarking standard) or 999.9 fine (99.99%, often called 'four nines'), which is what Royal Mint Britannias and most investment bars are made of. The last fraction of a per cent is trace metals left by refining.
999 is the UK hallmark fineness mark for 24ct gold: at least 999 parts per thousand pure gold. It is the highest of the UK's gold standards (375, 585, 750, 916, 990 and 999). Bars and coins are usually stamped 999.9 by the refiner or mint as well.
10 grams of 24 carat gold is worth £991.60 today: the £99.16 per-gram rate multiplied by ten. The 10 g bar is the most popular small investment bar, and 10 g is the standard quote in India, which is why many people search for it.
No. Sovereigns and Krugerrands are 22 carat (916.7 fine). The 24 carat UK bullion coin is the gold Britannia, struck in 999.9 fine gold since 2013. A one-ounce Britannia contains £3,084.22 of gold at today's price; a full sovereign contains 7.32 g of pure gold, worth £725.85.
24ct scrap (broken 999 jewellery, old bars with damaged packaging, 24ct dental or chain pieces) is worth £99.16 per gram of metal, and specialist postal buyers pay 84-90% of that. Intact bars and coins are a different market: dealers pay 95-98% of the gold value, so never sell a Britannia or a sealed bar as scrap.
21 carat gold (875 fine, 87.5% pure) is worth £86.77 per gram today, or £1,012.07 per tola. It is the usual purity for jewellery from the Gulf states and Egypt. 21ct is not a UK hallmarking standard, so a 21ct piece assayed in the UK is marked at the next standard down, 750 (18ct), even though it contains more gold than 18ct.
How the 24ct Gold Price Per Gram is Set
The 24ct price is the international spot price of gold, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and benchmarked twice a day by the LBMA Gold Price auction in London, converted to pounds and divided by 31.1035 to give a per-gram figure. Every lower carat is this number multiplied by its purity:
carat price per gram = 24ct price per gram × (carat ÷ 24)
Because the pound moves against the dollar, the sterling 24ct price can rise on a day the dollar price is flat, and vice versa. Our gold price history page charts the sterling price back to 1971.
